Review Nvidia Shield Tablet K1

Nvidia’s original Shield Tablet, which we looked at—and liked a lot—back in late 2014 for its impressive performance and unique game-focused features, was effectively put out to pasture in mid-2015, when the company issued a voluntary recall due to concerns about the battery overheating. Review Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 While not all Shield Tablets were affected by the recall, in a market flooded with alternatives, having a recall hanging over unsold tablets probably isn’t going to do good things for sales. But the Nvidia-made Tegra K1 chip inside the original tablet is still plenty peppy (especially for gaming). And the tablet’s gaming-focused features (which we’ll detail in a bit) help the device stand out in a field of competing devices that are starting to look and feel pretty similar. Review Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 So, instead of retiring the Shield Tablet, Nvidia has reworked the slate, and renamed it the Shield Tablet K1. The company nixed the passive stylus (which we didn’t fi...

Review SSD Drive OCZ Trion 150 (480GB)

If budget solid-state drives (SSDs) were pinatas—and that’s hardly a stretch of an analogy, considering the battering that SSD makers are taking on price these days—OCZ is taking a from-the-heels swing at them with the Trion 150. Review SSD Drive OCZ Trion 150 (480GB) The Trion 150 is its second-generation SSD based on TLC (triple-layer-cell) memory modules. If you recall, the now-Toshiba-owned OCZ released its first TLC drive, the Trion 100, back in July of 2015. (For more on TLC and other memory types, see our primer Buying an Solid-State Drive: 20 Terms You Need to Know.) The drive was an overall solid effort, earning three-and-a-half stars from us, though we noted that the SanDisk Ultra II was a slightly better deal. This time around, OCZ, under its new ownership, is largely sticking to the same formula from the first drive. The drive’s performance specs are mostly unchanged from the last generation’s, with the only shift being that the company has upgraded the drive’s fl...
