Long live the mouse and keyboard, a good way to control video games

Years games I only PC with mouse and keyboard. Then I have years almost exclusively played with a controller. Now I’m back with the mouse and the keyboard, and it was an illuminating homecoming.

My relationship with the OL ‘ point n-click-n-Clack, probably the best way to control PC games, has been complicated. I could not even all set-top consoles as a child, so my main gaming output was a gaming PC that I built. As a result, not I have grow up final fantasy and GoldenEye. I grew up with unreal and half-life. I play not these games with the joystick or a game controller for as far as I knew that was not possible. I played with mouse and keyboard.

In the early 2000s, I sold my gaming PC and games for a few years stopped. I returned in 2007 and found that a lot had changed. I have an Xbox 360 just in time for gears of was call of duty 4 and mass effect. Console controls had become much better in seven years, since I first played Halo with an original Xbox controller. I started greedily through the Xbox burn 360 library, and for a few years, it’s played like I everything.

Finally, I went back to the PC and found that I’m not more comfortable using mouse and keyboard. I was not the controls for the graphics. I started my TV my PC plug and played everything with a controller

My current configuration. Corsair did a while back the keyboard me, and I bought the mouse, because I liked always Logitech gaming mice. I recently replaced my old Max Payne Trackpad on a whim out with this SteelSeries one and how it actually really.

That’s changed lately. A year or so ago, I moved my gaming PC from TV and on top of my desk. I have a monitor that is better than television. So I decided to start with mouse and keyboard. I’m not really up to the point where I owned either DPI or key resistance or something like that. I found a pretty standard setup, and I’m sticking to it. It has been for so many years way still interesting return to the womb of mouse and keyboard. Here is what I learned.

Have I needed time,

Time acclimating back take two recent games I on PC games: overwatch and Shadow Warrior 2. Both games will work well with mouse and keyboard, but for different reasons.

Overwatch works well because the game is fast and responsive and if you not the kind of players who are locks to a single character (not so), must you be ready to control a number of different types of characters. If I play as D.Va or Roadhog am, I quickly as Shotgunner and target to be able to work in the vicinity. I need more precision when I soldier 76 or Hanzo games. (Just kidding, I games never Hanzo.) If I Lucio games, I have to while driving along the wall goals can.

2 benefits from mouse and keyboard controls: Shadow Warrior, because based largely on sword fighting, and most of its combos are much easier, with taps, swipes a mouse and a keyboard pull off. It is also much easier to keep up with the breakneck speed of the game, when you can turn in less than a second 180 degrees.

Sorry, widow.

The biggest thing that I had to adapt to the lack of objective support (AA). Most console games have some kind of aim-assist, in which the game subtly magnetized crosshair of the player’s goals. It makes the player feel more accurate than to compensate, largely a controller analog stick can be as inaccurate.

I games a ton of fate on PS4 and aim-assist is a huge factor in this game. It is something that you will not notice, to do. Sometimes your goal is temporarily “stuck”, an enemy, and be a shot that completely would have missed you if you have been free with the aim, had pull off. People build their entire fate game style rifles with high AA, goes for sniper areas objectives to magnetize and guns, the “balls at enemies of a larger size”. Aim-assist is a big part of why fate feels as good as it works. It is one of the most important components in a console game “Secret sauce,” which is what the game feel.Looks impressive, but I’m sure my thumb was not fully responsible. The most PC games offer to support far fewer target players, if they offer any. You have to actually place your cross-hairs before you shoot to your goal. On the other hand you have objectives precise control needed, much more accurate.

I make too many adjustments for this. It turns out that if you play enough FPSes with a controller you leave is to target support. It has been difficult, how much I’ve considered control. If I want something, I can just move my mouse, so right where I want it’s practically on the pixels. I was not able to do that for a long time been.

My method is faster, but that is highlighted when my eyes and hands are too slow. After a few weeks, fate to play, I returned to overwatch on the PC and I felt like on drugs. I was so fast and accurate, I did not know what to do with me. If I play as Ana or soldier 76, the micro-movements, which I can do, come during the persecution of the opponent’s often too fast for my brain to process. It’s exciting, but it is often overwhelming.

My attitude will change, I will change it all

Our Shutterstock account is active at the moment, so this is what you get. If I play with mouse and keyboard, I am as follows. The two attitudes make a big difference on the general nature and I feel way during a game. I am aware and awake, when I top seats. I’m closer to the screen. I feel more in the game, similar to how I felt when you play at a standing desk. As a bonus if I play late at night, am, I am less likely to start zoning.

Of course there is a middle ground. It is possible to sit back and still the mouse move. But in general I’m very much an upright and active when using mouse and keyboard.

I’m not as fast white, what to do obviously goes with me even

During a mouse more accurately than an analog stick to target an on-screen arms, that I very impressed am moving how much faster my figure. Mouse optic enables my character torso, as soon as my real-life moves to move head – faster, really. In a game I can my whole body 180 degrees in the blink of a whip.

After years of playing with a controller, that needs the speed to get used a lot on it. In a game like Shadow Warrior 2, incredible feels it, especially, if in a zoom riot with a sword, quickly jump to safety. But it can be too confusing. If I ever Barry of all super speed, this is probably it, would fight like me: very quickly, usually only swing my arms around randomly in the hope I land some hits.

It makes me much more aggressive

If I’m using mouse and keyboard aggressive games as I am, if I play with a controller. I feel better to play me. I’m faster and more accurate, and that leads to bounce me and fall much more enemies.

This is an important distinction: I feel, I’m better. I’m not really better. For the first time I played far cry 4 with mouse and keyboard I was surprised how I played. I heard in coverage so much ducking and began to run in circles around dudes battle and take out before she could react. It was great when it worked, but it took me most of the time also in trouble.

The gaming mouse has returned more than the gaming keyboard

When I started playing PC games developed, I had never seen, a gaming mouse, let alone a gaming keyboard. I played with a basic ass keyboard, which came with my PC and have a basic ass mouse.

Today, mouse and keyboard are generally still the same. Apart from this, mice have seen a few minor enhancements and refinements. There are now so many different gaming mice, I hope not she can just to keep. There are mice with all sorts of configurable TaSten and adjustable weights. There are dozens of buyers’ guides help people choose you dedicated the best mouse.

Gaming keyboards, but not nearly so much changed. The best gaming keyboards are well made and carefully coordinated, but when it comes to it there are still only light mechanical keyboards the Clack clack of as I grew up

What, YOU’re tall and covered with dust.

Sometimes I find frustrated me if you use my gaming keyboard. I WASD for movement, obviously has down. E is almost always the ‘use’ corresponds to the A or X button on a controller and Q is usually no matter what special ability would be associated with usually Y or a shoulder button. Both are within easy reach. R is reloaded, which is usually X on the controller, and it is very easy to hit it with my index finger. Shift leads and control squats, making up for the two sticks. (I will never understand people who prefer duck with C.)

Melee attacks are a ProblEM, but. They are often depicted on F or T, and I have a hard time intuitively for either of them in the heat of the moment. The problem there is that melee attacks are usually a “heat of the moment” kind of business. Grenades are also an issue. Often the G key a step is assigned away from the D, where my hand rests and it is very easy for me to hit F on the way. Want me to throw a grenade, or I shall execute a melee attack? Or maybe turn on my flashlight? It’s a crapshoot.

I me along most of them by reprogramming these commands to one of the additional keys on my gaming mouse work. My mouse has only so many extra buttons, and if it depends on my fingers are just going to have to learn again where you have to go over time. The only way out is better with the keyboard that I have.

I’m actually my monitor refresh rate

I have a monitor, goes up to 144 hz, and I love it. There was a time when it would said, that a high refresh rate doesn’t matter. Well, I games with mouse and keyboard, I can certainly say: it is important. It’s partly because I’m so close to the screen to sit, and partly because my movements are so much sharper. I have my graphic settings, overwatch run than to get close to 144 fps, how can I get it and play better in this way is simply reduced. It runs better, it plays better, and I’m better. I now understand why so many PC gamers care about higher refresh rates. If they have used their PCs just as glorified living room consoles, they would not probably.

PC ports can a much larger loafers

Bad PC ports are usually bad in the same way: they are poorly optimized, you lack of customization, they are buggy, and they have bad mouse and keyboard support. A lot of games, which will be released on PC and consoles simply copy their controller inputs to the PC version, especially if the developer does not start, so that games for PC.

I’ve always understood why PC gamer, get excited, but it was not playing with a mouse and keyboard until I begin again, that I really live, it could be as annoying

I was confident that the PC version of no. one sky would make it easier, my inventory to manage, as it have been at a PS4 controller, but I was bummed that functionality had the PC menus poor mouse. The same went for Dragon age: Inquisition, which worked somewhat with a controller but has never felt right for me with mouse and keyboard. The stuff makes a difference to insure that your game works well with a mouse to the point where people, the great games such as watch dogs 2 now go out of my way to PC gamers. (And bless it.)

There are still games I’d rather express with a controller

Third-person games. I’m sure I played some third-person games with mouse and keyboard back in the day, but at the end of the 90s years/beginning of the 2000s, there aren’t nearly as many consoles third-person action games on PC. I have recently tried to play some of the third person games I’m already to play – the Witcher 3, Batman: Arkham Knight, dark souls 3 – with mouse and keyboard. Yes, no. No sale

The biggest problem is movement. The mouse is not moved, my head is how it in an FPS. It moves the camera. There is a small difference but is a surprisingly important, and what feels smooth and of course in the first person feels himself-handed and clumsy in the third person.

I recently had to capture some shots of Assassin’s creed brotherhood and not the game I could work with my controller. I was horrified how strange’s Ezio with mouse and keyboard control. I guess, how much more I am the Division, if I use a mouse and a keyboard, but not make it up for how strange it feels to move around or take cover. Also hybrid ego/third games like Deus Ex: shared humanity are too cumbersome.

I would not still say is a “better” mouse and keyboard

In the rule when about PC game controls people talking to start the discussion about whether the mouse and keyboard are better than a controller will be. Unsurprisingly, I think both are viable options, and a complete setup of PC gaming should be both.

Recently I came across a 2014 daily dot article, which fought the showdown between two Titanfall teams: Xbox champs Exertus Zen and a lesser-known team of PC gamers. Exertus of the PC version of the game their Xbox controller plugged in and took the mouse and keyboard player. The results were interesting.

From this article that cited competitive players Brandon “Seagull” Larned:

A controller might actually an advantage for small adjustments against a distant target compared to a mouse, especially since the mouse sensitivity probably required to Titanfall which run rapid movement, even if it does not close when stacking or mid revs.

but while the consoles player could take control of the card, they were not skilled in the actually taking advantage of its establishment – it took much more effort to actually save a recording as a PC team in a similar position.

“I don’t think it is possible that a controller disconnect the hard Parkour routes, which use most PC gamers,” said Larned. A concrete example is a seven seconds flag run up colony moved the team almost in the third card against Exertus.

“for the most part, almost all Xbox players as well as mouse and keyboard do not move”, he said.

A unique competition will never answer that question whether controllers actually can compete with mouse and keyboard, but I love that it’s happening and hope it comes back in the future. The other console manufacturers embrace the idea of PC cross play, so will be the more.

It’s amazing that we are still using these things

My favorite thing about the use of mouse and keyboard to play video games is… well, the fact that I use a mouse and a keyboard to play video games. The mouse has been in its present form since the 1980’s years and the keyboard since well until then. Neither is designed to play video games. The keyboard was for data entry. Was the mouse to point and click. It happened just like that, that they work together really well for ego mobility

In the years since the first mouse on a PC connected was, video games have evolved and changed in countless ways. Video game-control methods have also changed, Atari and Nintendo game controller then evolved into the finely tuned DualShocks and Xbox controllers of today. But apart from some mechanical refinements, the mouse and keyboard remain stubbornly unchanged.

Sure, some designers have tried to come up with new ideas. Apparently every week some peripheral Maker starts a strange custom keyboard that it aims to give the left hand, the more complicated to do. These devices do not stay there

The highest profile and most successful attempt innovation was probably valves steam controller that uses a haptic right thumb-pad with the left joystick in an attempt, the precision of the mouse-look to combine the functionality of the controller movement. It is a step in an interesting direction, but also the valve was not able to replace the old standby.

If anything, gaming mice and keyboards are more divided and recently focused. MenShen can obsessed over the most important reaction and mouse DPI, but for the majority of the games two button mice and basic mechanical keyboards are still the way to go.

I’m sure that a lot over the next 10 years will change video games. You get more ambitious, more complex and much better look. But if history is a guide, we play the PC games by 2026 with the same mouse and keyboard, which in the 90s of our parents used to make tables. I’m fine with it.
